Weekend in the Mountains

Right on the Polish border!

Friday night we finally arrived to the chalet that we would be staying in for the weekend. When we got there it was already 7:30 or 8 in the evening so it was dark. We brought some of our stuff in to the chalet and said hello to everyone. I was introduced to everyone there, and it was a lot of people to keep track of. We all sat down around the fireplace and started to socialize. Then they started to bring out all sorts of snacks for us to eat all night. Later in the evening some more people came. One of them brought homemade rolls and egg salad. They were absolutely delicious. We stayed up until 3 in the morning talking and celebrating Robert’s friend’s 50th birthday.

Saturday, we were supposed to get up kind of early, but Ruda and I were staying in a room that was tucked away from everyone, so we overslept. But we still made it in time to have birthday cake for breakfast. I was feeling super sick still, so when everyone got all dressed and ready to go work outside, they told me to stay inside. Everyone would be outside all day chopping wood for the chalet for the winter. Instead I helped make lunch a little bit, but mostly just hung out and rested. After lunch was made I went downstairs to hang out with the little kids that weren’t outside. They were making gingerbread and carving pumpkins. So I hung out with them and made a couple of cookies. They were having a hard time getting their head around the fact that I didn’t speak Czech. When I told them "nerozumím"(I don't understand), they didn't quite understand why. They kept speaking in Czech which was good for me, but I only very rarely understood. After making some cookies, everyone came in for lunch. We had two kinds of soup, and guláš with bread dumplings.

After lunch I helped the kids frost the cookies before going upstairs to rest. For dinner we had pumpkin soup that was made from the bits that were left over from pumpkin carving. We also had some meat that had been cooked over a fire all day. It was all delicious. After dinner we went upstairs to hang out around the fireplace again and talk. They wanted to play some group games. The first game/activity we did was really entertaining. We would hold a piece of paper on our forehead and then write your first name in print and your last name in cursive. I think I did pretty well on the print, but for some reason none of the pens worked when I tried cursive. There were some mixed results among the group, but it was still fun to see. Then we played another game where we would get a category like “color” and everyone would write down what they thought everyone was going to write. We did about 10 topics before counting up the points. We ended up staying up until about 2 even though everyone was tired from all of the wood chopping.

Sunday morning, when I woke up, I immediately noticed a thin layer of snow covering the skylight above me. I was so excited to see snow for the first time this year here! We got out of bed and got a quick little breakfast before packing up our stuff. We said our goodbyes and started our journey home. On our way home we stopped for a little lunch. After lunch we finished our drive home in the rain since we were out of the mountains again. When we got home I unpacked a little bit and we started some laundry. I was still pretty sick, so I called my best friend Elsa in the US briefly before dinner, and then went to bed early.
